Meet the ArtistLinda HowellMy batik art is created using hot wax which I draw, splash, drip or brush onto white cotton cloth. I then brush on a layer of dye which is absorbed into the fabric except for those areas that have been waxed. I add further layers of wax and dye until I am satisfied with the effect. Finally I complete the picture by ironing out the wax. Inspiration comes mainly from walks in my local open spaces, especially the garden of St Michael's Convent in Ham, Kew Gardens and the wilds of Richmond Park. Here I am always surprised and delighted by the wonders of the natural world, which I aim to recreate. I trained in graphic design and illustration at Canterbury College of Art in the 1970s, since when I have explored a variety of media. I have been practising the art of batik for three years and I am a member of the Batik Guild of Great Britain.
